2013 Mortician & Funeral Director Calendar

And I'm done! This coming year's calendar is live at my Zazzle store, mollymortphotography! I worked super hard on this and am so proud of it! I promise that you won't find another mortuary calendar like it.

And for a recap, here is what you will find in it:

2013 ~ Welcome to a new year with an antique scalpel! The background is beige and I added a sepia tone and scratches to the photo, making it look aged.

January ~ One of my favorite items, a bottle of Lip Lock! Lip Lock is lip adhesive meant for securing mouths and keeping them closed. It might be hard to tell, but it's bright red. In today's funeral world we use adhesives that are clear and made available in tubes. As for the photo, I used an acid frame and added an aged photo frame to it.

February ~ Derma Wax Creams. Derma being Greek for skin, these creams would be used anywhere something needed covering up; a blemish, a wound, or an abrasion. In today's funeral world the makeup used for correcting skin faults is similar to stage makeup in that it's very thick and heavy. As for the photo, I love the warm brown color of the box and the gold writing. I set the background of this picture to black and faded the color out.

March ~ A collection of beauty items: a gold tube of lipstick; deep red, liquid rouge; a glass jar of face powder; eye caps; suture string; a man's shaving razor and shaving lotion brush; an old, black plastic comb; and a glass jar of lip moisturizer. I put Tiger Lilies in this photo for some added depth and color. I also gave the photo an aged tone and added a black frame.

April ~ Here we have a collection of embalming tools. At the top of the photo is a trocar button applicator, used to insert a trocar button in the belly button. From left to right: an aneurysm needle, a groove director used for vein expansion, two more aneurysm needles, a nail file, three scalpels, and a bistoury knife used for tissue excision. The photo was taken in a mortician's toolbox, hence the built in straps for holding tools.

May ~ A collection of makeup; face covering, lip tint, and liquid foundations. I love the glass jars these items come in and the labels are very art deco.

June ~ I love the historical irony of this photo. Flowers at a funeral evolved out of a desire to cover the smell of decay. Viewings could last for days, and in some cases they lasted much longer. As embalming came into vogue, companies who supplied the chemicals came up with liquid scents for masking any bad smells. Today, it's very common for families to bring in perfumes and colognes of their loved ones. So here we have green, liquid incense in a clear glass bottle and pink tea roses. I gave the photo a gaussian blur, a bit of a glow, and a hassel frame is what is giving the corners that blue and black color.

July ~ Phantom Cosmetic Cream. I love these milk glass jars! And just like they say, the cream was used to cover blemishes. They come in all different colors: pink, flesh, dark flesh, light flesh. I shot this photo with a wooden background, added a warm tone and a black frame.

August ~ One of my favorite pieces in my collection, an embalmer's hand pump used for aspiration and injection. The smaller round item is a stopper and the two strips are rubber tubing. Before electric embalming machines, embalmer's used these two items to drain materials and deliver embalming fluid. I shot the picture in my bathtub so that I could best recreate a ceramic embalming table. Then I added a framing filter and a black frame.

September ~ Needles and trocars that I photographed in a silver, filagree pin cushion. Needles are used for suturing and trocars are used for suction. These particular trocars are very tiny. The original photo was taken on a white background. I added a very light teal, decorative background and an old fashioned photograph frame with taped corners.

October ~ Embalming fluid! I love that these two bottles of embalming fluid are in glass - you wouldn't believe how heavy they are! Also, on the sides of the bottles, the units are measured out for you in ounces. They are fabulous! For this photo I put the bottles in front of an old print and processed with a warming filter and a black frame. Today's bottles come in plastic and just don't have that old world glamor. Not that cavity or arterial fluid is glamorous...

November ~ Another hand pump used for embalming and the case it's stored in. My second favorite item in my collection. I photographed this picture to have a dirty and stained background, but I thought it looked nicest with a white frame.

December ~ An antique doctor's bag, or in this case, a mortician's. Aged brown leather, a handle to grasp - it's in lovely condition. Along with it there's a hand pump, a jar of chemical sealant, cavity fluid, arterial fluid, a trocar, and aspirators. A grainy frame finishes the photo off.

2013 Mortician & Funeral Director Calendar

I am so excited! Last year I made a mortuary calendar for 2012. It turned out ok, it was pretty boring. I didn't do anything with the photos and I shot everything on a white background. So, it was ho hum. Oh, but this year, this year I rocked it! Since January I've re-shot everything and ran all photos through Photoshop and OnOne. I even used Pixlr! The end result is beautiful, creepy, and unique. I am really, really, really proud of this piece and I put a lot of work into it. It's the only calendar of it's kind and I just feel so smart for coming up with the idea!

At any rate, I've always had a healthy pre-occupation with the death industry and have collected items related to it. My collection ranges from the turn of the century to the 1960's, it's super fascinating! So, I put it all together an came up with a calendar that will be available for sale at mollymortphotography, otherwise known as my Zazzle store. I expect it to be $25. I felt that was fair for all the work I've put into it and it's uniqueness. I should be wrapping up all the final details on it this week and having it up for sale by July 20. In the meantime, below is a detailed account of each month's photo.

Until next time, take care & keep it creepy :)

New Koi Fish Designs!

It's been forever since I've blogged! I've been super busy working four jobs (for reals) and it's just eating up all my photography time (insert super sad face here). On the other hand, working this much has challenged me to find new ways to take photos and what one item do I always have with me? My cell phone. It's got a great camera on it, at 8 megapixels, and there a million free photo apps I use to process my phone pics. So, I came up with a new category on my Zazzle store called Phone Photos. I only allow myself to post photos I've taken and processed with my phone. As a result, the photos look best on cards and postage stamps - but they're super fun!

One of my favorite phone photos is one I just finished working on today, a Koi fish taken in a fabric store...
I love this design so much that I did two versions...
The first card is great because the red and gold colors in it are so deep and vibrant. And I love the second one because it's got such a nice cross process look to it. These cards can be customized too. Zazzle has over 300 fonts to choose from and they make it so easy to add your own message.

That's it for today. I have more phone photos to work on, enough to keep me busy for a couple weeks. Keep in mind, I only put these designs on cards, postcards, and postage stamps. If you would like me to add a design to something else, you can drop me a line from my Zazzle site and I'll let you know if it can be done. Sometimes there just isn't enough pixels to print on an ipad cover, for example.

One last note, Father's Day is just around the corner and I've got plenty of designs for Dad too!

Spring is Coming

For me, spring is defined by flowers. I realize everyone takes flower photos, but I think I have an extra good eye with this subject and I'm particularly proud of my flower pictures. So with that, here are four of my favorite shots from my collection. You can see more at my store, mollymortphotography.

Macro Red Poppy Flower iPhone 4 Case

Protect your iPhone cell phone with this case featuring a macro photograph I took of a poppy. It was shot with a Raynox 250, so there's a very limited depth of field to this photo. On the other hand, the intensity of the green and the thorns on the stem are amazing and the color in this photo is vibrant and bold.

Red Flowering Quince Stamp

These postage stamps feature a photo I took of the Red Flowering Quince, also known as the Japonica. This flower is actually a shrub and used as a hedge in some locals. The pretty red flowers are so soft looking and like how in this photo the bokeh is really highlighting them. Be sure to look for matching greeting cards and postcards.

Red Zinnia iPad Case

Keep your iPad safe with this case featuring a photo I took of a red Zinnia flower. Zinnias come in many colors and shapes making them a popular garden flower. Many gardeners plant Zinnias because they attract butterflies. This one is red with yellow stamen; the petals look soft and velvety.

Budding Purple Iris Postcard

This postcard features a photo I took of a budding, purple iris. A very spring oriented photo, the grass in the background is bright green and the sun was hitting the bud of the Iris creating sparkles! A very colorful and pretty photo! Be sure to look for matching stamps.

Reusable Tote Bags

These little tote bags are cute. They are handy as purses, lunch bags, snack bags, you could carry your library books home - there's a lot of things you can do with a recyclable bag! These are all made from 100% cotton, there are seven styles to choose from, and they are all customizable!
Miniature Pumpkins Tote Bag

This 100% cotton, reusable tote bag features a photo I took of a pile of Jack B Little pumpkins. They are very tiny pumpkins, with light orange skin and dark orange ridges. I added some extra saturation in Photoshop when I cleaned up the photo, so the pumpkins are really colorful. This would be a great bag for a child to use at Halloween as a trick or treating bag!

Mortician Antique Lip Adhesive Tote Bag

Shop in style with this reusable tote bag featuring a photograph I took of a mortician's bottle of Lip Lock. Just as the name implies, this dark red adhesive acted as lip glue to seal the mouth of decedents. It's interesting to note that this glue is red, it would have stained lips and skin, making the decedent look odd if their lip color didn't match. Today's mortician doesn't have that problem as modern glues are clear. This vintage, glass bottle is clear with a black lid and it has directions printed on the front of the bottle in red and blue ink. It most likely dates to the late 1940's. This photograph was processed in onOne Photo Suite and Photoshop. A black frame was added and a dirty glass effect, making the photo look more vintage and grunge in appearance. A unique treat for yourself or a great gift for the funeral director in your life that can be customized with text, size, and style.

Red Rose With Bird Bath Tote Bag

This tote bag features a photograph I took of a single red rose bud. This photo was taken in late winter, so everything still looks dead. In the background is a gray, cement bird bath and green and brown grass. There are lots of earth tones in this photo, emphasized with a mottling texture I added in Photoshop and increased saturation. Further, I added a black vignette to the photo to emphasize the focal point. A really nice treat for yourself or a great gift for the rose lover in your life that can be customized with text, size, and style.

Purple Dragonfly Perfume Bottle Tote Bag

Super cute bag for a little girl featuring a photo I took of a purple dragonfly perfume bottle. The dragonfly sits on top of the bottle with swirly, purple wings and a body made of pink rhinestones. The perfume bottle itself is silk glass and circled with more pink rhinestones. The whole piece sits in the middle of a multi purple colored flower. The background is white with photoshopped purple butterflies, pink leaves, and a pink flower swirl motif. It's very pretty and very girly. I added a navy blue handle to the bag, but black also looks nice. Or you can customize it so that it's just plain.

Yellow & Green Toolbox Tote Bag

This reusable tote bag features a photo I took of my dad's toolbox. I think he uses this one to hold his welding tools. I'm not for sure, you'd have to call him. At any rate, it's yellow with green trim and I shot with a vignette for effect. This would actually be a handy bag to have in the garage; a person could keep odds and ends in it such as nails, screws, small tools, and stuff.

Thank you for your business and feel free to check out my whole store, mollymortphotography. There are customizable gifts for everyone for every occasion :)

Laptop Sleeves

Zazzle has a great collection of sleeves for protecting your laptop. These sleeves are made with 100% neoprene, are lightweight, and water resistant. They come in 3 sizes: 10", 13-14", and 15-17".
Blue Graffiti Cat Sleeve

This sleeve features an awesome photo I took of local Portland graffiti. This photo was taken downtown, off of the side of a building. I like that the cat is reddish orange and on a blue background. Particularly, I enjoyed the tagger noting "kitten" on it. It's a solid photo in that it has something of an HRD look to it; it's bright and vibrant - just a fun piece of art.

Three Toed Sloth Sleeve

This sleeve features an amazing painting my dad did of sloths! I have a fixation for all things three toed sloth and he captured them perfectly in this portrait. From the brown streaks of their eye coloring to the playfulness of the baby hanging in the tree, the world would be a better place with more sloths.

Antique Mortician Suture Needles & Arterial Tubes Sleeve

This sleeve features an awesome photo I took of an embalmer's set of suture needles and arterial tubes. Using my personal collection of antique and vintage embalming equipment, I have made a collection of gifts. My collection has everything from scalpels to an embalmer's hand pump and ranges from the turn of the century to the 1960's. This is a truly unique case for the funeral director, mortician, embalmer - it's perfect for anyone in the funeral industry! It's also perfect for anyone living on the macabre side of life!

Japanese Lucky Cat Sleeve

This sleeve features a photo I took of a Japanese Lucky Cat, or Maneki Neko. It is also known as Lucky Cat, Cat Swipe, Money cat, or Fortune Cat and is sometimes mistaken as Chinese Lucky Cat. In processing the photo, I saturated the colors and added some glow highlights. I hope you love the colors in this photo as much as I do!

I sold a Japanese Lucky Cat Sleeve today! It was my first laptop sleeve sale ever, I was very excited!

Puzzles

Today I am featuring puzzles! I have approximately 100 designs in my Zazzle store, mollymortphotography. I do wish the puzzles were larger, as it is they are 8x10 with 110 pieces. They are made of cardboard and mounted on chipboard. And Zazzle's printing is gorgeous, so you know these will look great and make wonderful gifts or a nice treat for yourself!

Ocean Beach & Grass Puzzle

Have fun doing this puzzle featuring a photo I took of the beach on the coast in Washington State. I believe I was near Pacific Beach. In this particular photo I liked how the blue, green, and yellow of the sand blended together for a soft photo, the colors resemble sunset. There were only a touch of clouds in the sky, making this a pretty landscape photograph.

Olympia, Washington Graffiti Puzzle

Have fun doing this puzzle featuring a photo of graffiti I took in Olympia, Washington. In downtown Oly, there's a lot of graffiti covering the back walls and alleys of downtown. I liked this piece because it's bright and colorful and it says beer. And who doesn't like beer?

Pumpkin Puzzle

Have fun doing this puzzle featuring a photo I took of a pile of Jack B Little pumpkins. They are very tiny pumpkins, with light orange skin and dark orange ridges. I added some extra saturation in Photoshop when I cleaned up the photo, so the pumpkins are really colorful.

Doodle Speakers!

From Zazzle: Doodle by OrigAudio™ is a light and durable hard-plastic speaker with a vibrantly printed fabric face cover and kickstand for easy propping. Powered by USB cable (included) to power via your computer or 2 AAA batteries (not included), the Doodle speaker has a 3.5 mm. headphone jack that is compatible with any standard music device. I've also been reading the Doodle Speaker reviews and everyone has been raving about the printing - it looks great! At some point I'd like to get with it and order the sloths!
Three Toed Sloth Doodle Speakers

These fun speakers feature an amazing painting my dad did of sloths! I have a fixation for all things three toed sloth and he captured them perfectly in this portrait. From the brown streaks of their eye coloring to the playfulness of the baby hanging in the tree, the world would be a better place with more sloths.

Vintage Radio Doodle Speakers

What a fun way to listen to your music with these portable speakers featuring a photograph I took of an old radio in my dad's garage. I'm guessing, but I'd say this aged yellow radio is from the 70's. I shot the photo to look vintage and added a vignette. The radio is missing a couple dials, it's covered in bird poop, there are lots of creepy spiderwebs around it. The photograph has a nice retro feel to it. These high quality Doodle speakers fit any 3.5mm headphone jack. Examples include iPhones, MP3 players, iPads, and cell phones. A really nice treat for yourself or a great gift for the rock and roller lover in your life.

Welding Coat & Tools Doodle Speaker

These speakers feature a photo I took of my dad's welding equipment. There's his jacket and helmet and some other tools. If you called my dad, he'd tell you welding is cool.

Happy Blue Heeler Doodle Speaker

What a fun way to listen to your music with these portable speakers featuring a photograph of a happy Australian Cattle Dog. Australian Cattle Dogs are also commonly known as Blue Heelers and this is a great photograph of a mostly gray female with additional black and white coloring in her fur. Her red collar lends the perfect amount of bright color to this photograph taken on a black background. These high quality Doodle speakers fit any 3.5mm headphone jack. Examples include iPhones, MP3 players, iPads, and cell phones. A really nice treat for yourself or a great gift for the dog lover in your life.

Japanese Lucky Cat Doodle Speakers

These speakers feature a photo I took of a Japanese Lucky Cat, or Maneki Neko. It is also known as Lucky Cat, Cat Swipe, Money cat, or Fortune Cat and is sometimes mistaken as Chinese Lucky Cat. In processing the photo, I saturated the colors and added some glow highlights. I hope you love the colors in this photo as much as I do!

Pink Bead & Ribbon Doodle Speakers

These speakers feature my mom's crazy, colorful lamp shade covered in glass beads. This particular shot features one of the pink beads with a pink ribbon strung through it, backed by pink and orange ribbon. I processed the photo in Photoshop to give the bead a borderline HDR look. I really wanted to bring out the detail of the glass, and the texture of the ribbon. The original photo was taken with a Raynox 250 lens, giving this piece a macro feel. With so much detail and color, this will print beautifully on everything.

Weekend Roundup!

These three items were my most looked at items this week. A great mix!
Pink Bunny Rabbits Flexible Magnet

I love that these magnets are vinyl laminated and stain and water resistant! I also love the sizes they come in! Decorate your fridge in style with this flexible magnet featuring a photo I took of three pink, ceramic bunny rabbits sneaking about in green grass! Perfect gift for an Easter basket!

Sleep Gray Chinchilla Blank Greeting Card

This blank greeting card features a photograph I took of a sleepy, gray chinchilla. This is a close-up photo featuring his face, especially his black eyes, long black whiskers, and gray nose. He even has some glitter in his fur from his dust bath. A super cute photo! This card is available in two sizes and can be customized with over 300 fonts in a wide assortment of colors. Be sure to look for matching postage stamps.

Antique Flower Vase with Bird Blank Greeting Card

Send some love with this postcard featuring a photo I took of a gold bird sitting in an antique, French vase. I took the photo as a closeup with a broad depth of field. I wanted the bird's feathers and the roses on the vase to be in focus. It's a little gothic, a little Victorian, an odd and slightly dark piece. There are matching postage stamps too!

That's it - hope your weekend is great!

Pink Graffiti Elephant Card

This blank greeting card features a photo I took of local Portland graffiti. This photo was taken on Belmont Street, off of the side of a building. Is it creepy in here?

Creepy little me has been working on my Mortuary line of products. I was so excited to launch these items, I didn't really dress up any of the photos. I've since gone back and started reworking the pictures for this line. I'm making them creepier and spookier!
Mortician Antique Lip Adhesive Keepsake Box

Store your tiny things in this decorative, felt lined, wood box featuring a photograph I took of a mortician's bottle of Lip Lock. A black frame was added, and a dirty glass effect, making the photo look more vintage and grunge in appearance. These small boxes are available in four finishes and are great for holding little things such as earrings, rings, necklaces, and miniature keepsakes. They also come in two sizes and can be customized with text. A wonderful gift for yourself or the funeral director in your life.

Mortician Antique Liquid Rouge iPad Case

Keep your iPad safe with this protective case featuring a photo I took of an embalmer's bottle of liquid rouge. The bottle is clear glass and the blush inside of it is bright red. The label is orange and yellow with black and yellow writing.

In 2012 I created a Mortician Calendar. Again, I was so excited to get it in the Zazzle marketplace, I took all the photos on a white background and called it good. Now that I've got a little time, I'm dressing these photos up for the 2013 calendar. Below are two photos that will be used. The TV show American Horror Story has been a huge influence in how I process these pics. If you haven't seen it and you like a good spooky story, do check it out!

The photo above features sewing needles and tiny aspirators as used by morticians. Needles are obviously used for sewing up; the aspirators are used for sucking things up.

This scalpel photo was the cover of last year's calendar, sans processing. This version will be the cover for the 2013 calendar. This scalpel is all one piece. Modern scalpels use disposable blades.

So, that's it for today. Just busy working on dressing up some photos so I can make the Mortuary line even better and trying to get next year's calendar done!

Red Rose Bud & Bird Bath

Posting has been sporadic for me as I've been settling in at a new job. Sort of a bummer for me as I greatly enjoy taking a picture, processing it, and creating Zazzle items. But, it's a fun job, so I don't mind too much.

Spring has been making some appearances around my neighborhood. We've got a Rhododendron bush in full bloom on our property - which seems really strange given it's still winter here in Portland. But, I did take a walk yesterday and saw lots of birds and things in bloom. Today's picture comes from yesterday's walk. It's a single red rose bloom in front of a cement bird bath. I don't like roses, but I loved how the red, green, and browns mixed together in this shot. Lot's of earth tones with some added texture courtesy of Perfect Photo. You can also find matching postage stamps, or postcards if you prefer. Not too mention magnets, puzzles, bags...It's a pretty photo that will print well on anything.
Blank Greeting Card
That's it for today. Hope everyone has a nice weekend!

Today I'm featuring a few items that showcase my favorite dog, the Blue Heeler. Also commonly known as an Australian Cattle Dog. The dog I've used for this photos is Pearl, she's my mom's dog. Pearl is great to photograph because she's so interested in what I'm doing and she always looks insanely happy. Items with her sweet little face have been super popular and I'm proud to show them here.

Overall, Pearl is a mostly gray female with additional black and white coloring in her fur. She has gray eyelashes too - they look neat! And in the photos where you can see it, her red collar lends the perfect amount of bright color to this photograph taken on a black background. As usual, these items can be customized with text, or change the orientation of a photo if you don't like the direction it's in, and with the Rickshaw line you can change the lining and binding colors. Be sure to check out the whole lineup of Australian Cattle Dog items at my store. There's a treat and a gift for everyone :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love being able to put my own message to a photo that really says and describes what I'm thinking. With over 300 fonts and a wide range of colors, adding your own message is easy and fun.

Old Vintage Radio Blank Greeting Card
I've featured this photo before, it's a favorite. It's an old, beige radio that sits in my dad's garage. It's covered in bird poop and spider webs, but it looks awesome despite being icky! I shot this photo lomo style; dark, vignette corners compliment the rich colors in the photo and it just looks sort of 1970's-ish. A popular seller.

Lomo Style Old Rusty US Mailbox Blank Greeting Card
This shot is another favorite. Again, the photo was taken using a lomo effect and then processed in Photoshop. So, you've got black, vignette corners. The turquoise of the mailbox and the red and purple of the rust are really saturated and rich in color. The tone is vintage meets lonely with a dash of retro :)

Man's Welding Coat & Tools Blank Greeting Card
Father's Day isn't until June, but when you are ready to buy dad a card, you should check out my store. I have a great section called Dad's Garage and it features cards like this one. Here we have my dad's garage again and this time it's his welding coat and tools that I've featured. I shot this photo using a lomo effect and then added some cross process color wherein the reds and greens of this photo are the heaviest colors.
That's it for today! Here's hoping you've had a lovely Valentine's and your week is going great!

Hello Doctor....

I have this crazy cat, Dr. Kitty Phelps Esquire III. That's a mouthful, right? Doesn't matter, he only answers to Kitty. He's a strange cat. But maybe it's me that's stranger... I keep a Facebook account for him, The Good Dr., where we have many running jokes about Kitty's "tonics" and prescription abuse. Oh, we're a laugh a second in my household...

At any rate, I got the chance to shoot a government issued medical kit for fallout shelters and it contains this bottle of Stronger Ether. Not just ether, but the stronger kind. Because a good Dr. always needs the stronger kind. I managed to get Kitty to hold still long enough to get this photo. I'm not entirely pleased with it, but the Dr.'s patients have loved it and asked me to make a shirt. Soooo, I did. I don't care for it because the writing on the jar of ether is a little out of focus, though Kitty is perfect in the shot. I will not argue with what the people want and so here it is....

Persian Cat Tee Shirt
This tee is customizable for men and women, it comes in many different styles and colors, and it's pretty much just awesome. Note: it looks best on black.

So, if you're looking for a Blue Persian, who huffs either, and thinks he's a Dr. - this is your tee.

I'm also a fan of sealing envelopes with stickers. These Pink Easter Bunny Stickers match my greeting cards and you could also use them just for giggles in an Easter basket!

Let's Talk About Coffee Mugs

I love coffee so much, it's amazing I consume actual food and not just lattes all day. And because of my love for coffee, I have decided today's post will be about coffee mugs. The mugs at Zazzle are dishwasher and microwave safe. The standard coffee mugs come in two sizes, 11oz. and 15oz. Just before Christmas Zazzle introduced a jumbo mug that holds 20oz. (yay me!) and a 6oz espresso mug. My parents have ordered a few of my mugs and they're great. They got two Happy Blue Heeler mugs and the printing on them is great! Here are some examples of the mugs I like:

You can visit my store, mollymortphotography, to buy these mugs and to see more :) Have a great start to your week and thanks for you business! ~mm
