2013 Mortician & Funeral Director Calendar

And I'm done! This coming year's calendar is live at my Zazzle store, mollymortphotography! I worked super hard on this and am so proud of it! I promise that you won't find another mortuary calendar like it.

And for a recap, here is what you will find in it:

2013 ~ Welcome to a new year with an antique scalpel! The background is beige and I added a sepia tone and scratches to the photo, making it look aged.

January ~ One of my favorite items, a bottle of Lip Lock! Lip Lock is lip adhesive meant for securing mouths and keeping them closed. It might be hard to tell, but it's bright red. In today's funeral world we use adhesives that are clear and made available in tubes. As for the photo, I used an acid frame and added an aged photo frame to it.

February ~ Derma Wax Creams. Derma being Greek for skin, these creams would be used anywhere something needed covering up; a blemish, a wound, or an abrasion. In today's funeral world the makeup used for correcting skin faults is similar to stage makeup in that it's very thick and heavy. As for the photo, I love the warm brown color of the box and the gold writing. I set the background of this picture to black and faded the color out.

March ~ A collection of beauty items: a gold tube of lipstick; deep red, liquid rouge; a glass jar of face powder; eye caps; suture string; a man's shaving razor and shaving lotion brush; an old, black plastic comb; and a glass jar of lip moisturizer. I put Tiger Lilies in this photo for some added depth and color. I also gave the photo an aged tone and added a black frame.

April ~ Here we have a collection of embalming tools. At the top of the photo is a trocar button applicator, used to insert a trocar button in the belly button. From left to right: an aneurysm needle, a groove director used for vein expansion, two more aneurysm needles, a nail file, three scalpels, and a bistoury knife used for tissue excision. The photo was taken in a mortician's toolbox, hence the built in straps for holding tools.

May ~ A collection of makeup; face covering, lip tint, and liquid foundations. I love the glass jars these items come in and the labels are very art deco.

June ~ I love the historical irony of this photo. Flowers at a funeral evolved out of a desire to cover the smell of decay. Viewings could last for days, and in some cases they lasted much longer. As embalming came into vogue, companies who supplied the chemicals came up with liquid scents for masking any bad smells. Today, it's very common for families to bring in perfumes and colognes of their loved ones. So here we have green, liquid incense in a clear glass bottle and pink tea roses. I gave the photo a gaussian blur, a bit of a glow, and a hassel frame is what is giving the corners that blue and black color.

July ~ Phantom Cosmetic Cream. I love these milk glass jars! And just like they say, the cream was used to cover blemishes. They come in all different colors: pink, flesh, dark flesh, light flesh. I shot this photo with a wooden background, added a warm tone and a black frame.

August ~ One of my favorite pieces in my collection, an embalmer's hand pump used for aspiration and injection. The smaller round item is a stopper and the two strips are rubber tubing. Before electric embalming machines, embalmer's used these two items to drain materials and deliver embalming fluid. I shot the picture in my bathtub so that I could best recreate a ceramic embalming table. Then I added a framing filter and a black frame.

September ~ Needles and trocars that I photographed in a silver, filagree pin cushion. Needles are used for suturing and trocars are used for suction. These particular trocars are very tiny. The original photo was taken on a white background. I added a very light teal, decorative background and an old fashioned photograph frame with taped corners.

October ~ Embalming fluid! I love that these two bottles of embalming fluid are in glass - you wouldn't believe how heavy they are! Also, on the sides of the bottles, the units are measured out for you in ounces. They are fabulous! For this photo I put the bottles in front of an old print and processed with a warming filter and a black frame. Today's bottles come in plastic and just don't have that old world glamor. Not that cavity or arterial fluid is glamorous...

November ~ Another hand pump used for embalming and the case it's stored in. My second favorite item in my collection. I photographed this picture to have a dirty and stained background, but I thought it looked nicest with a white frame.

December ~ An antique doctor's bag, or in this case, a mortician's. Aged brown leather, a handle to grasp - it's in lovely condition. Along with it there's a hand pump, a jar of chemical sealant, cavity fluid, arterial fluid, a trocar, and aspirators. A grainy frame finishes the photo off.

2013 Mortician & Funeral Director Calendar

I am so excited! Last year I made a mortuary calendar for 2012. It turned out ok, it was pretty boring. I didn't do anything with the photos and I shot everything on a white background. So, it was ho hum. Oh, but this year, this year I rocked it! Since January I've re-shot everything and ran all photos through Photoshop and OnOne. I even used Pixlr! The end result is beautiful, creepy, and unique. I am really, really, really proud of this piece and I put a lot of work into it. It's the only calendar of it's kind and I just feel so smart for coming up with the idea!

At any rate, I've always had a healthy pre-occupation with the death industry and have collected items related to it. My collection ranges from the turn of the century to the 1960's, it's super fascinating! So, I put it all together an came up with a calendar that will be available for sale at mollymortphotography, otherwise known as my Zazzle store. I expect it to be $25. I felt that was fair for all the work I've put into it and it's uniqueness. I should be wrapping up all the final details on it this week and having it up for sale by July 20. In the meantime, below is a detailed account of each month's photo.

Until next time, take care & keep it creepy :)

New Koi Fish Designs!

It's been forever since I've blogged! I've been super busy working four jobs (for reals) and it's just eating up all my photography time (insert super sad face here). On the other hand, working this much has challenged me to find new ways to take photos and what one item do I always have with me? My cell phone. It's got a great camera on it, at 8 megapixels, and there a million free photo apps I use to process my phone pics. So, I came up with a new category on my Zazzle store called Phone Photos. I only allow myself to post photos I've taken and processed with my phone. As a result, the photos look best on cards and postage stamps - but they're super fun!

One of my favorite phone photos is one I just finished working on today, a Koi fish taken in a fabric store...
I love this design so much that I did two versions...
The first card is great because the red and gold colors in it are so deep and vibrant. And I love the second one because it's got such a nice cross process look to it. These cards can be customized too. Zazzle has over 300 fonts to choose from and they make it so easy to add your own message.

That's it for today. I have more phone photos to work on, enough to keep me busy for a couple weeks. Keep in mind, I only put these designs on cards, postcards, and postage stamps. If you would like me to add a design to something else, you can drop me a line from my Zazzle site and I'll let you know if it can be done. Sometimes there just isn't enough pixels to print on an ipad cover, for example.

One last note, Father's Day is just around the corner and I've got plenty of designs for Dad too!

Spring is Coming

For me, spring is defined by flowers. I realize everyone takes flower photos, but I think I have an extra good eye with this subject and I'm particularly proud of my flower pictures. So with that, here are four of my favorite shots from my collection. You can see more at my store, mollymortphotography.

Macro Red Poppy Flower iPhone 4 Case

Protect your iPhone cell phone with this case featuring a macro photograph I took of a poppy. It was shot with a Raynox 250, so there's a very limited depth of field to this photo. On the other hand, the intensity of the green and the thorns on the stem are amazing and the color in this photo is vibrant and bold.

Red Flowering Quince Stamp

These postage stamps feature a photo I took of the Red Flowering Quince, also known as the Japonica. This flower is actually a shrub and used as a hedge in some locals. The pretty red flowers are so soft looking and like how in this photo the bokeh is really highlighting them. Be sure to look for matching greeting cards and postcards.

Red Zinnia iPad Case

Keep your iPad safe with this case featuring a photo I took of a red Zinnia flower. Zinnias come in many colors and shapes making them a popular garden flower. Many gardeners plant Zinnias because they attract butterflies. This one is red with yellow stamen; the petals look soft and velvety.

Budding Purple Iris Postcard

This postcard features a photo I took of a budding, purple iris. A very spring oriented photo, the grass in the background is bright green and the sun was hitting the bud of the Iris creating sparkles! A very colorful and pretty photo! Be sure to look for matching stamps.

Reusable Tote Bags

These little tote bags are cute. They are handy as purses, lunch bags, snack bags, you could carry your library books home - there's a lot of things you can do with a recyclable bag! These are all made from 100% cotton, there are seven styles to choose from, and they are all customizable!
Miniature Pumpkins Tote Bag

This 100% cotton, reusable tote bag features a photo I took of a pile of Jack B Little pumpkins. They are very tiny pumpkins, with light orange skin and dark orange ridges. I added some extra saturation in Photoshop when I cleaned up the photo, so the pumpkins are really colorful. This would be a great bag for a child to use at Halloween as a trick or treating bag!

Mortician Antique Lip Adhesive Tote Bag

Shop in style with this reusable tote bag featuring a photograph I took of a mortician's bottle of Lip Lock. Just as the name implies, this dark red adhesive acted as lip glue to seal the mouth of decedents. It's interesting to note that this glue is red, it would have stained lips and skin, making the decedent look odd if their lip color didn't match. Today's mortician doesn't have that problem as modern glues are clear. This vintage, glass bottle is clear with a black lid and it has directions printed on the front of the bottle in red and blue ink. It most likely dates to the late 1940's. This photograph was processed in onOne Photo Suite and Photoshop. A black frame was added and a dirty glass effect, making the photo look more vintage and grunge in appearance. A unique treat for yourself or a great gift for the funeral director in your life that can be customized with text, size, and style.

Red Rose With Bird Bath Tote Bag

This tote bag features a photograph I took of a single red rose bud. This photo was taken in late winter, so everything still looks dead. In the background is a gray, cement bird bath and green and brown grass. There are lots of earth tones in this photo, emphasized with a mottling texture I added in Photoshop and increased saturation. Further, I added a black vignette to the photo to emphasize the focal point. A really nice treat for yourself or a great gift for the rose lover in your life that can be customized with text, size, and style.

Purple Dragonfly Perfume Bottle Tote Bag

Super cute bag for a little girl featuring a photo I took of a purple dragonfly perfume bottle. The dragonfly sits on top of the bottle with swirly, purple wings and a body made of pink rhinestones. The perfume bottle itself is silk glass and circled with more pink rhinestones. The whole piece sits in the middle of a multi purple colored flower. The background is white with photoshopped purple butterflies, pink leaves, and a pink flower swirl motif. It's very pretty and very girly. I added a navy blue handle to the bag, but black also looks nice. Or you can customize it so that it's just plain.

Yellow & Green Toolbox Tote Bag

This reusable tote bag features a photo I took of my dad's toolbox. I think he uses this one to hold his welding tools. I'm not for sure, you'd have to call him. At any rate, it's yellow with green trim and I shot with a vignette for effect. This would actually be a handy bag to have in the garage; a person could keep odds and ends in it such as nails, screws, small tools, and stuff.

Thank you for your business and feel free to check out my whole store, mollymortphotography. There are customizable gifts for everyone for every occasion :)

Laptop Sleeves

Zazzle has a great collection of sleeves for protecting your laptop. These sleeves are made with 100% neoprene, are lightweight, and water resistant. They come in 3 sizes: 10", 13-14", and 15-17".
Blue Graffiti Cat Sleeve

This sleeve features an awesome photo I took of local Portland graffiti. This photo was taken downtown, off of the side of a building. I like that the cat is reddish orange and on a blue background. Particularly, I enjoyed the tagger noting "kitten" on it. It's a solid photo in that it has something of an HRD look to it; it's bright and vibrant - just a fun piece of art.

Three Toed Sloth Sleeve

This sleeve features an amazing painting my dad did of sloths! I have a fixation for all things three toed sloth and he captured them perfectly in this portrait. From the brown streaks of their eye coloring to the playfulness of the baby hanging in the tree, the world would be a better place with more sloths.

Antique Mortician Suture Needles & Arterial Tubes Sleeve

This sleeve features an awesome photo I took of an embalmer's set of suture needles and arterial tubes. Using my personal collection of antique and vintage embalming equipment, I have made a collection of gifts. My collection has everything from scalpels to an embalmer's hand pump and ranges from the turn of the century to the 1960's. This is a truly unique case for the funeral director, mortician, embalmer - it's perfect for anyone in the funeral industry! It's also perfect for anyone living on the macabre side of life!

Japanese Lucky Cat Sleeve

This sleeve features a photo I took of a Japanese Lucky Cat, or Maneki Neko. It is also known as Lucky Cat, Cat Swipe, Money cat, or Fortune Cat and is sometimes mistaken as Chinese Lucky Cat. In processing the photo, I saturated the colors and added some glow highlights. I hope you love the colors in this photo as much as I do!

I sold a Japanese Lucky Cat Sleeve today! It was my first laptop sleeve sale ever, I was very excited!
